Perhaps there's no better way to get back into the competitive groove for the Nashville Predators than to face another Western Conference playoff contender in the Minnesota Wild (7:00 p.m. Central on FS-TN). There are a number of elements which have tied these teams together over the years, from the ownership (former Preds owner Craig Leipold of course owns the Wild now) down to the roster (3 former Preds are with Minnesota), and even an old bit of enmity between two rough-and-tumble wingers.

Remember how I've been harping all season long about the Shots For & Against figures for the Preds? Well, Minnesota has it even worse, and if it weren't for stellar goaltending so far, they'd be in the Western Conference dumpster.
After starting out the season as one of the hottest teams in the NHL, the Wild experienced a (widely predicted) free fall starting in mid-December, going an awful 4-11-4 since December 13. The Preds are 1-1 against them so far this season, dropping a 3-2 decision in Minnesota back in November, and winning a 2-1 shootout game on December 18, in which the Wild flubbed away two out of their three attempts during the shootout.
In light of their troubles, there have been some callups and assignments with AHL affiliate in Houston, but nothing major has been done to the roster so far. The odd man out these days in Minnesota is our old pal Marek Zidlicky (we should see other former Preds Greg Zanon and Jed Ortmeyer, though). According to our colleagues at Hockey Wilderness he's likely to be a healthy scratch tonight. On the books at $4 million per season through 2012-2013, you'd have to think this is a player whose doesn't have much more of a future in Minnesota.
For the Predators, it's all about seeing if they can keep the good times rolling, after an 18-5-0 streak carried them into the All-Star break as one of the hottest teams in the league. Jerred Smithson and Francis Bouillon are reportedly unlikely to go (per Josh Cooper), which still leaves an interesting decision on who to scratch.
Up front, will Brian McGrattan dress, to counter the likes of Clayton Stoner, Kyle Brodziak, or just to keep Cal Clutterbuck in line? Of course, there's also Brad Staubitz to deal with... remember how he MMA'd Jordin Tootoo a couple years back when Staubitz was a Shark? Video found at Hockeyfights.com:
While I'm sure the main focus will be on earning the two points tonight, you have to wonder if Tootoo will take an opportunity for payback if it arises. He has yet to battle Staubitz again after that incident.

Smithson & Bouillon
Are they likely to go, or unlikely to go? I thought I saw in the daily links that they were good to go.

Follow the link in the article above
Josh Cooper tweeted that Trotz said “unlikely” today.

Ahh. Okay. Twitter is blocked on my work computer, and I don’t have a smartphone to check it out there either.
Hoelke11 - January 31, 2012
Staubitz has been on my !@#$ list ever since that fight
Staubitz is a cheapshot artist, he hit Tootoo repeatedly with his elbow pad and that is what led to all the blood. I’d like to see him get dance cards with both Toots and McGrattan tonight, for the third scratch I’d go with Bourque.
eamus-catuli - January 31, 2012
Me too. Every time I hear Staubitz’s name I want to beat his @ss myself. Not that I could. I’ve been waiting for the day Tootoo exacts his revenge. Maybe tonight’s the night.

Here are to wins tonight by...
Nashville!
Calgary!
Vancouver!
Go Preds!
davisca - January 31, 2012
Man it’s hard to cheer for Vancouver. I may have to just ignore that game for now and check the standings tomorrow. Easier to pretend the game doesn’t exist that way…..
Evanbio - January 31, 2012
too bad vancouver and chicago can't find a way to both lose that game
Herzausstein - January 31, 2012
Instead, they’ll find a way to take it to OT.
LuvthePreds - January 31, 2012
It is, but I’d rather them win than Chicago.
davisca - January 31, 2012
Hah
That’s the exact opposite of who Wild fans want to have the W.
JSLandry - January 31, 2012
I really don’t like seeing Calgary or Vancouver win but it is definitely better than the alternative.
thewildfop - January 31, 2012
And that was supposed to be a reply. That’s what happens when you stay gone for an extended period of time.
thewildfop - January 31, 2012
I wanna be the only one in our division who wins tonight! (Except Columbus… I didn’t even look to see if they’re playing, but I wouldn’t care if they win.)
davisca - January 31, 2012
Why did you have to post that fight?
I’d like to forget that one. But it shows Toots can take a beating just as well as he can dish it out, just like all the other great pugilists.

And did you really drop the emnity bomb on us?
Isn’t that when you owe somebody something?
Pekka for Predator Pontiff - January 31, 2012
According to Webster’s…
Dirk Hoag - January 31, 2012
ill will…. was willy sick that day?
Creeping Death - January 31, 2012
Funny thing
I saw that word for the first time today in English class…and now I see it here…strange how that keeps happening.
JSLandry - January 31, 2012
staubitz vs machine gun McGratten
would love to see this match up. Staubitz wont be able to get close enough to use his elbows, and McGratten throws punches as fast as some boxers.
flyalder - January 31, 2012
He's spits lightning and craps thunder!
McPounder’s gotta be itchin’ for a battle.
Pekka for Predator Pontiff - January 31, 2012
Sorry
but Staubitz is a scratch again tonight due to him sucking at hockey. The most likely fighters would be AHLer Kassian and Stoner. Unlike Staubitz they actually win their fights.
HonorableH - January 31, 2012
Amen
