Last night was one of celebration in Toronto and Phoenix, as the jerseys of Mats Sundin and Jeremy Roenick were retired. Interestingly, however, the teams in question followed those ceremonies up with entirely different outcomes.

a question about retired numbers
Is number 99 the only number retired from every team in the NHL? is there any website that catalogs all the retired numbers throughout the league? I would be curious to know what numbers have been retired most? and how close a single number has been to being retired by every team in the league (obviously other than 99 which was retired by the NHL not just a collection of teams)

Wikipedia has a pretty comprehensive
compilation of retired nhl numbers. I’m surprised Orr’s #4 was never retired league-wide. I was also surprised that no one had worn 66 since Lemieux until last season.

the most common retired NHL number is lucky number 7 with 10 retires, followed by 9 with 9R and 3 with 8R

for those of you interested in other sports:
Most common in MLB are #5 and #20 as retired with 9 each.
NFL – #7, #12, #40 and #70, 5 each
NBA – #10 and #22 – 8 each
each of these are based upon TEAM retiring number, not the league as in the cases of Gretzky, Jackie Robinson, etc
